A close associate of former President Goodluck Jonathan has hinted that the ex-leader is seriously considering a return to the presidential race in 2027.
According to Vanguard, the ally, who is a senior member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), disclosed that talks within the party to bring Jonathan back as a presidential candidate are already well underway. He claimed the former president has given the green light and is motivated by the need to tackle Nigeria’s growing poverty and economic hardship.
The source revealed that the push to bring Jonathan back is being championed by respected Nigerian elders and party leaders who believe he managed the country’s affairs with relative stability during his six-year tenure.

“The aim is to rescue the country and restore its economy,” the source said, adding that Jonathan has begun consulting with influential figures across political circles.
He also disclosed that Jonathan recently met with former military ruler General Ibrahim Babangida (retd.) in Minna to discuss the possibility of a one-term presidency. Although the outcome of that meeting remains private, the ally said there’s growing support for Jonathan’s return, especially in northern Nigeria.
The former president is also said to be holding strategic meetings in the South-South region, rallying support from political stakeholders and former allies.
While there has been no official confirmation from Jonathan himself, his recent political movements and consultations have fueled speculation that he may be preparing to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
