President Bola Tinubu has honoured Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for their historic fifth straight AfroBasket championship win.
At a special reception in Abuja on Monday, President Tinubu (represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima) announced that each player will receive the national title of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), $100,000 in cash, and a furnished apartment in the capital city.
The reward comes after D’Tigress defeated Mali 78–64 in the final game of the 2025 AfroBasket tournament, held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

Speaking at the event, VP Shettima praised the team for their unity and resilience, saying, “This victory is proof of what we can achieve together. Nigerian women have always made this country proud in sports, and D’Tigress is no exception.”
Coach Rena Wakama also made history during the tournament, becoming the first woman to lead D’Tigress to an AfroBasket title since taking charge in 2023.
This win marks the team’s fifth consecutive AfroBasket championship; an unprecedented record in African women’s basketball, with previous victories in 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, and now 2025.
It’s not the first time President Tinubu has extended such generous gestures. He recently gave similar rewards to the Super Falcons for their triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
