Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have written their names in the history books once again after clinching their fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s Afrobasket title, just like the women’s football team, the Super Falcons, did theirs a few days ago.
Led by coach Rena Wakama, the team defeated Mali in a thrilling final on Sunday, August 3, at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The win not only secured Nigeria’s place as the 2025 champions but also made them the first country ever to win five Afrobasket titles in a row. Even more impressively, D’Tigress have remained unbeaten in the tournament since 2015; a decade of dominance.

The final saw Nigeria overcome a slow start, trailing 21–26 after the first quarter. But by halftime, the game was level at 41–41.
D’Tigress stepped up their pace in the third quarter, pulling ahead with a 61–56 lead. In the final stretch, they tightened their defense, allowing Mali just eight points and sealing the match with a 14-point margin.
This latest triumph came just days after a tough semi-final battle against Senegal, where the Nigerian side needed a strong final quarter to edge out a win.
Coach Wakama, who made history in 2023 as the first woman to lead a team to Afrobasket glory, now boasts two titles in just two appearances.
With this victory, D’Tigress have once again proven they are the queens of African basketball; consistent, determined, and unstoppable. While Nigeria’s Super Falcons remain the queens of African football.
