At just 12 years old, Emeka Nzeruike was thrown into prison in 2015. He had no lawyer, no trial, and no one to speak for him.
He was just a child, lost, alone, and forgotten by a system that was supposed to protect him. Now 22, Emeka has finally walked free.
For a decade, while his mates went to school, chased dreams, and built their futures, Emeka sat in a prison cell, still waiting for a trial that never came.

He was accused of stealing, yet never convicted, never even given a chance to defend himself.
On Monday, a court in Lagos ordered his immediate and unconditional release. The judge called the case baseless.
His freedom was secured through the relentless efforts of Innocent Voices Nigeria, a human rights group that took up his case and fought to bring him justice.
The story of Emeka is a painful reminder of the cracks in Nigeria’s justice system and how a child could disappear into prison, unseen and unheard, for 10 whole years.
But today, justice finally spoke, thanks to the Innocent Voices Nigeria.
