The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expelled former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and slammed a 30-year ban on him over allegations of false membership claims and misconduct.
The decision, announced in a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, followed accusations that El-Rufai never properly registered with the party at the ward level, as required by the SDP constitution. Instead, he allegedly faked documents, posed for photographs with suspended party officials, and falsely announced his membership on social media.
Recall that Igbo TV had reported that El-Rufai dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the SDP after being neglected by the Tinubu-led administration, which he supported and campaigned for.
The SDP further accused him of acting in bad faith by associating with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) while allegedly plotting to drag the SDP into an unauthorized coalition.

According to the party, his actions created internal tension and amounted to manipulation, impersonation, and gross indiscipline.
“He self-proclaimed himself as member number 001 in his ward without any valid registration,” the statement said. “He also attempted to illegally convene a National Executive Committee meeting and destabilize our structures through dishonest political schemes.”
The party’s National Working Committee (NWC) said the expulsion is with immediate effect, barring El-Rufai from making any public or private claims to SDP membership until July 28, 2055. He is also forbidden from using the party’s name, logo, or symbols for any purpose.
INEC and the general public have been asked to disregard any future representations made by El-Rufai in the name of the SDP.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to upholding discipline and transparency in its affairs, calling on all prospective members to adhere strictly to due process.
