Former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has taken a swipe at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the current state of Nigeria’s economy, accusing his administration of replacing real outcomes with misleading statistics.
In what seems like a jab shared on Facebook, Obi recalled Tinubu’s 2022 campaign speech in Delta State, where the then APC flag bearer dismissed economic data and said he only cared about “putting food on the table” of Nigerians. Tinubu had mocked Obi’s focus on statistics, saying, “Na statistics we go chop?”
“Now, two years into his four-year tenure, Nigeria is ranked among the hungriest nations in the world,” Obi wrote. “Millions of Nigerians don’t even know where their next meal will come from.”

Obi accused the Tinubu administration of using flawed data to paint a false picture of the economy, citing recent controversies around unemployment figures, inflation rates, and GDP rebasing.
He described the approach as an attempt to cover up the worsening economic reality facing average Nigerians.
“President Tinubu is now overfeeding Nigerians with wrong statistics,” he said.
“From inflation to GDP, everything is being spun to sound better than it actually is.”
Reaffirming his long-held belief that good governance is built on integrity and compassion, Obi emphasized that leadership is not guesswork.
“Governance is not rocket science or a gamble,” he stated. “It requires sincerity of purpose, character, competence, capacity, and compassion.”
The former Anambra State Governor ended his message with his usual renewed hope signature: “A new Nigeria is POssible.”
The post has since gone viral, stirring debates over Tinubu’s earlier campaign promises of abundance and how much people are still suffering. The debate has also taken a direction towards the importance of statistics, which Tinubu had jabbed Peter Obi about.
