The Ohanaeze Ndigbo has appealed to the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to drop his 2027 ambition and support President Bola Tinubu’s second term. According to the group, such a move would promote national unity, peace, and political balance.
Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Deputy National President of a faction of Ohanaeze, made this call in a statement from Abakaliki. He argued that defeating Tinubu would be nearly impossible, especially with opposition leaders divided and Atiku Abubakar also eyeing the presidency again.
Isiguzoro warned that if Obi and Atiku split the opposition vote like it happened in 2023, it would hand Tinubu an easy win, leaving the South-East to bear the fallout.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo fully acknowledges Obi’s constitutional right to contest the presidency in 2027. However, we must confront the stark reality that, despite his considerable social media following, the potential for betrayal looms large.

“Such betrayal could yield dire consequences, with the Igbo people once again bearing the repercussions, as we did in the elections of 2019 and 2023. In 2019, Mr. Obi was the running mate to Atiku Abubakar, and the joint ticket ultimately cost the South-East an additional sixth state, a promise made by former President Muhammadu Buhari to Igbo leaders contingent upon their support.”
Meanwhile, the Labour Party remains divided over leadership. Two factions (the Abure-led group and another backed by Senator Nenadi Usman) are trading blame over the Supreme Court’s April ruling. Usman’s camp claims Obi still has full support, accusing rivals of trying to destabilize his alliance-building efforts.
Obi’s 2023 running mate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, weighed in during a TV appearance, acknowledging Abure as the party’s national chairman. He admitted the party had faced manipulation by “external forces” but said things were changing.
On Monday, Datti attended the NEC meeting of the Abure-led LP in Abuja and expressed interest in running for president in 2027. He added that Obi is free to also seek the ticket, with or without him as a running mate.
