Nigeria’s Super Falcons have booked a place in the final of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a dramatic 2-1 victory over South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in a gripping semi-final clash on Tuesday.
The fierce encounter between the two rivals saw Nigeria take the lead just before halftime when Rasheedat Ajibade calmly converted a penalty in the 45th minute. South Africa suffered an early setback in the 26th minute when striker Hildah Magaia was forced off due to injury, replaced by Thubelihle Makhubela.
Banyana Banyana responded with determination and equalized in the 60th minute through Linda Motlhalo, who converted a penalty to make it 1-1. As both sides pushed for a winner, the game seemed destined for extra time until Nigeria found a late breakthrough.

In the 94th minute, Michelle Alozie capitalized on a brilliant assist from Esther Okoronkwo to fire home the decisive goal, sealing a memorable win and sending the Super Falcons into yet another WAFCON final.
The victory keeps Nigeria’s dream of a 10th continental title alive and marks a strong comeback after missing out on the trophy in the last edition.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took to social media shortly after the win to praise the Falcons, calling their performance “nothing short of superlative.” He commended their grit, talent, and what he described as “the indomitable Nigerian spirit.”
“Congratulations to our Super Falcons! You have made the nation proud. Keep soaring. Don’t stop until you bring the trophy home,” Tinubu wrote on his official X account.
With the final looming, the Super Falcons carry not just the hopes of a nation but the momentum of a team determined to reclaim their place at the top of African women’s football.
