The Edo State Government has responded to the backlash surrounding Governor Monday Okpebholo’s recent remarks on Labour Party chieftain Mr. Peter Obi’s visit to the state, clarifying that the governor’s statement was not a threat but a call for adherence to security protocols.
In a statement issued Sunday and signed by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, the government emphasized that Edo remains open to all Nigerians, including high-profile political figures. However, it stressed the need for visitors (especially those likely to attract large crowds or media attention) to notify state authorities and obtain necessary security clearance.
“As the Chief Security Officer of the state, the Governor has a constitutional obligation to protect both residents and visitors,” the statement read. “Ignoring protocol poses security risks, not just for the guest but for citizens who may be inadvertently exposed to danger.”
Governor Okpebholo’s comments followed Mr. Obi’s recent public engagements in Edo, including church visits and donations, which were reportedly conducted without prior coordination with state authorities.

The government warned that while public giving is commendable, it must be carried out discreetly to avoid inadvertently endangering religious institutions, especially amid rising cases of abductions targeting clergy in the region.
Quoting Matthew 6:2–4, the government echoed the biblical principle of discreet charity, stressing that discretion in public donations is both a moral and security responsibility.
The statement further noted that Governor Okpebholo’s stance should not be politicized or compared to past incidents involving other governors. “The Governor is not Peter Obi, who, as Governor of Anambra State, once detained Nasir El-Rufai during a visit,” it said.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance, Okpebholo assured all Nigerians of a warm welcome to Edo, provided they comply with established protocols to ensure safety and order.
During an event today in Benin, which FCT Minister Nyesom Wike was in attendance, Governor Okpebholo said he does not regret his statement, advising Peter Obi to take permission from him before coming to Edo, saying that if what he said is a crime, then so be it.
