Edo State Commissioner for Information and Communication Paul Ohonbamu has claimed that Peter Obi’s visit to Edo State caused a stampede that led to the death of three persons.
In a recent interview with Channels TV, the commissioner affirmed his boss’s (Governor Okpebholo) recent public statement that Peter Obi must take permission from him before entering the state for security reasons.
According to Ohonbamu, Peter Obi’s visit to Edo was marked by unfortunate circumstances because of his popularity.
He explained that during Obi’s visit, there was a general stampede as people struggled to meet their acclaimed messiah. However, this led to the death of three persons.

“Intelligence reports confirmed it—two people died in the hospital. They were rushed there. Many of these things we don’t alert the public about.
“But you know, anywhere Obi enters, there’s this euphoria, and people rush after him. That can cause a stampede. The governor doesn’t want casualties in the state,” he said.
The video of Peter Obi’s visit to the Nursing school was played for him, and the interviewers asked if the stampede happened at the Nursing school premises and if the school authorities were aware.
The commissioner could not answer. He was again asked to share the location where the stampede happened.
He kept saying it happened in one of the places Obi might have visited in Benin. That Obi could not have visited just the school where he donated money.
Mr. Ohonbamu’s response lacked clarity and was filled with flimsy maneuverings to prove a point that didn’t exist.
