Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has issued a strong warning to Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, stating that any future visits to the state must be cleared with his office or Obi would be responsible for his own safety.
The warning, made during a rally in Uromi on Friday, followed the defection of PDP federal lawmaker Marcus Onobun to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Okpebholo used the occasion to criticize Obi’s recent visit to Edo State, where he donated ₦15 million to the St. Philomena Hospital School of Nursing in Benin City.

Addressing a cheering crowd, Okpebholo said, “The man who claimed he had no ‘shishi’ came and donated ₦15 million. Where did he get it from? He came without notifying the state government, and shortly after, three people died. If he comes again without clearance, whatever happens to him, he will bear the consequences. I am serious.”
He added, “There is a new sheriff in town. Peter Obi cannot just stroll into Edo anymore without passing through proper channels.”
The governor also claimed that Obi’s presence sparked unrest, indirectly linking the deaths of three individuals in Benin to his unannounced visit. He insisted that such incidents reinforce the need for security protocols.
Okpebholo used the event to boast about the APC’s growing dominance in Edo politics, celebrating Onobun’s defection as a blow to the PDP. “By 2027, we’ll deliver 2.5 million votes to President Bola Tinubu. PDP is dead in Edo. All they have left are imaginary numbers on social media,” he said.
Governor Okpebholo’s speech has sparked widespread reactions, with many mocking his pedigree as a governor because of his informal way of addressing his people. Many condemned his speech describing it as insensitive.
