The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed ongoing efforts to bring back former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, into its fold ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This was disclosed by PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, during an interview on Arise Television. He described Obi as a “political capital” and a product of the PDP whose return would significantly strengthen the opposition party’s chances in future elections.
“Peter Obi is our product, and the PDP indeed wants to get him back,” Abdullahi said. “He is a very great asset to any political party, and any party that gets him will benefit. Despite the massive rigging and manipulation he faced in 2023, he was still able to garner over six million votes. That shows his value.”

Obi, a former vice-presidential candidate of the PDP in 2019, defected to the Labour Party shortly before the 2023 primaries. He ran a strong campaign and won 12 states, including the Federal Capital Territory, ultimately finishing third behind Atiku Abubakar and winner Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the APC.
Abdullahi admitted Obi’s departure was a major blow to the PDP but maintained that the party still respects his influence and popularity, especially among youths and urban voters. He also revealed that the PDP is engaged in broad consultations and strategic planning to unify opposition forces and that Obi’s return is central to that effort.
“In the fullness of time, we believe we might get him back. It will be a big boost to the PDP,” he added.
Meanwhile, Peter Obi has reaffirmed his loyalty to the Labour Party but has expressed interest in working with a broader coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Former PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has also left the party and is playing a key role in this emerging opposition alliance.
