President Bola Tinubu has renamed the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) in Borno State as Muhammadu Buhari University in honor of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 82.
The announcement was made during a special session of the Federal Executive Council held on Thursday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The meeting was convened to pay tribute to the late leader.
“May we now adopt the University of Maiduguri as the Muhammadu Buhari University,” Tinubu declared at the conclusion of the meeting.
In his tribute, Tinubu praised Buhari as a leader of rare integrity and deep patriotism. He acknowledged Buhari’s imperfections but highlighted his honesty, moral discipline, and commitment to Nigeria.

“President Buhari was not without flaws; no human is. But he stood tall for his principles, simplicity, and loyalty to Nigeria,” Tinubu said. “His humility and quiet strength left a legacy that speaks louder than words.”
Recalling their political alliance, Tinubu reflected on the historic 2015 elections, where their partnership led to the first peaceful transition of power between political parties in Nigeria’s history. He described Buhari as a dignified leader who governed with restraint and returned home without interfering in his successor’s affairs.
“When he left office, he went quietly, seeking no influence from behind the scenes. That humility is the true measure of the man we are celebrating,” Tinubu added.
He also commended Buhari’s post-presidency lifestyle, describing it as consistent with the modesty he embodied throughout his life of public service.
Tinubu expressed gratitude to the inter-ministerial committee and Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, for organizing the state funeral within 48 hours.
Concluding his tribute, Tinubu offered prayers: “The People’s General, the Former President, your earthly duties are complete. May Allah forgive your shortcomings and grant you Aljannah Firdaus. Your legacy will continue to guide future generations.”
