Fresh details have emerged about the final hours of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82.
According to his nephew and close confidant, Mamman Daura, the late president was in high spirits just a day before his passing.
Daura, who visited Buhari on Saturday at the London Clinic, said that Buhari was cheerful and hopeful about returning to Nigeria soon.
“We talked about many things, laughed, and made plans. He even insisted hotel bills of those who came to London for him be settled before his discharge,” Daura recounted.
He explained that Buhari’s doctors had planned to discharge him later in the week, and there were no signs of any sudden deterioration. However, things took a sharp turn on Sunday morning.

Buhari reportedly experienced breathing difficulties shortly after breakfast. Despite the doctors’ efforts, he passed away around 4:30 p.m.
Also speaking to the press, former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, revealed he was at the same hospital and had just been discharged when he heard the news. “I rushed over to pay my respects and help with arrangements,” Abdulsalami said.
He recalled their friendship dating back to 1962 when both men joined the Nigerian military, and described Buhari as “a quiet, honest, and trustworthy man.”
While reflecting on Buhari’s leadership, Abdulsalami praised his strong stance against corruption, though he admitted that some of Buhari’s aides had not lived up to expectations.
He described Buhari’s passing as a “huge loss” to Nigeria and the African continent. “His death will certainly reshape the political space in Nigeria. I just hope it’s for the better,” he added.
President Bola Tinubu has since dispatched Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila to London to oversee the return of Buhari’s remains.
