The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has declared a three-day national mourning period to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, in London.

In a statement released on Monday, the party announced that all its political activities and public commentaries would be suspended from Tuesday, July 15, across all its chapters nationwide. The move, according to the ADC, is a mark of respect for the former president’s contributions to Nigeria.

The party praised Buhari’s dedication to public service, describing him as a man who embodied discipline, integrity, and commitment, both as a military officer and as a democratically elected president. While noting its political differences with him, the ADC acknowledged that Buhari remained a symbol of hope for millions of Nigerians, particularly the underprivileged, who stayed loyal to him throughout his political journey.

However, the ADC did not shy away from addressing concerns about recent political reactions. The party criticized some members of the current administration and ruling party for what it described as “opportunistic” attempts to exploit Buhari’s death for political gain.

“It is unfortunate that those who once distanced themselves from his legacy and leadership style are now seeking to take the lead in national mourning,” the statement read. “Such actions lack sincerity and should be treated with caution.”

The party also urged the Buhari family and his loyal supporters to be vigilant against those who may try to use the former president’s death for personal or political advantage.

The ADC concluded by calling on Nigerians to remember Buhari by embracing the values he stood for: honesty, humility, and a selfless commitment to the nation’s progress.
