Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has passed away in a London clinic on Sunday afternoon, according to a statement from his family shared by former media aide Bashir Ahmad on X.

“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin,” the statement read.

Just a few weeks ago, the late Buhari flew to London for medical treatment. News had it that this time, his illness was severe, and prayers were offered for a quick recovery. His successor, President Bola Tinubu, had sent the vice president, Kashim Shettima, to pay him a visit in London. Sadly, Buhari didn’t make it.

Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari rose from a military cadet to become military head of state (1983–1985) after a coup and, later, Nigeria’s democratically elected president (2015–2023).

He was the first opposition candidate in Nigerian history to defeat an incumbent president (that is, Goodluck Jonathan in 2015).

During his two terms, Buhari focused on anti-corruption efforts and security, battling Boko Haram in the northeast and working to stabilize the economy. His administration attracted lots of criticism for economic challenges.
