The University of Calabar (UNICAL) is currently at the center of a major controversy after its Vice Chancellor and Provost reportedly instructed over 300 dental students to transfer to other universities or abandon their academic pursuits entirely.
The affected students, some in their final year, have raised alarm over the psychological effect of this decision.
In what many have described as an unprecedented act of academic injustice, the institution allegedly admitted more students into its Dentistry program than the official number.

“This news is quite disheartening. Some of our colleagues even considered suicide,” wrote Ukay Joe, one of the affected students. “We’ve been in school since 2019 and the VC just asked us to transfer to other universities including those in their final year.”
Another student, Eze Stephen, shared how the announcement almost drove him to self-harm: “I’ve spent 5 years already. This news is disheartening. People had to hold me from doing something stupid yesterday after the provost and VC told us to find our way to other schools. I have paid all my charges, got distinction in biochemistry in my first MB.”
@OurFavOnlineDoc, called on the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, writing: “Some of these students are now planning to kill themselves and commit suicide… Please kindly intervene and save this situation… Evil thrives when everybody keeps silent.”
Students revealed that they were not offered alternatives or institutional support, and many claimed the decision has shattered their mental health and future plans.
