The Nigerian Senate has called for ₦200 million compensation to be paid by the National Assembly to the family of 2-year-old Ivan Onose Omhonrina, who tragically died after being hit by a stray bullet fired by an NDLEA officer during a raid in Delta State on July 13, 2023.

Ivan and his younger brother, Eronmosele, were in their mother’s roadside shop in Okpanam, Oshimili North LGA, when the NDLEA team stormed the location.

According to reports, Eronmosele sustained a graze to the eye, while Ivan was struck in the abdomen. Both were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre for surgery, but Ivan sadly did not survive.

During Wednesday’s Senate plenary—following a petition from Senator Neda Imaseun, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics—a minute’s silence was observed in Ivan’s memory.

Senators unanimously urged prompt compensation and called for deeper accountability within the NDLEA. The Senate’s resolution also urged the agency and the federal government to investigate and punish all individuals responsible for the deadly incident.

The Senate’s decision emphasizes the growing concern over collateral damage during security operations, especially when innocent civilians are involved.

As of now, the NDLEA has not released a statement on the implementation of the Senate’s recommendations. However, they had initially said they did not have money to compensate the family.
