Panic broke out in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Wednesday morning as unknown gunmen opened fire in the community, with many feared dead and multiple vehicles burnt.
According to eyewitnesses, one victim was shot dead inside a roadside shop, while the other was gunned down in a tricycle, known as Keke Napep. Disturbing videos from the scene showed residents screaming and fleeing as gunshots echoed across the area.
A woman who filmed the aftermath cried out, “Jesus Christ! They just shot someone here. See the person inside Keke.”

Another video showed thick smoke rising from vehicles set ablaze by the attackers. Witnesses claimed one of the vehicles belonged to the Anambra State Vigilante Group (AVG). “They just set AVG’s white Sienna on fire. These people are well prepared,” a fleeing resident said.
The incident adds to rising fears over increasing cult-related violence and insecurity in the region. Just weeks ago, a student of the nearby Federal Polytechnic, Oko, was killed in broad daylight by suspected cultists. Four others were killed and two kidnapped in another attack in Oko.
Residents and student groups are calling for urgent government and police intervention to restore safety in Ekwulobia and surrounding towns.
As of the time of this report, the Anambra Police Command has not been heard from.
