A tragic incident has rocked the Choba area of Port Harcourt after a man, identified as Saint Sunny Amadi, died from severe burns sustained when his house was allegedly set on fire by his pregnant girlfriend.
According to eyewitnesses, the suspect, Cynthia Chukwundah, a 300-level student at the University of Port Harcourt, reportedly doused the room with fuel and set it ablaze during a dispute. The fire engulfed the room, severely injuring both Cynthia and Sunny.
Sunny, 32, was rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) in critical condition. Despite efforts to save his life, he later died from the extensive burns.
Cynthia, who is reportedly heavily pregnant with Sunny’s child, also sustained injuries in the fire and is currently receiving treatment in the hospital. Due to her condition, she has not yet been able to speak to authorities about the events that led to the tragic incident.

The motive behind the act remains unclear, though neighbors claim the couple had a turbulent relationship marked by frequent arguments.
Confirming the incident, the Rivers State Police Command said investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the fire.
“Upon receiving the report at about 1112 hours, Police detectives from Choba Division promptly visited the scene and the victim at the hospital, who was in critical condition. Unfortunately, the victim later succumbed to injuries and died while on admission,” the police wrote.
“The Police have located Cynthia, who is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital due to injuries she also sustained during the incident. She is also heavily pregnant with the deceased’s child. Due to her critical condition, she is unable to provide a detailed account of the incident, but will do so when her condition is stable.’’
The police added that they are awaiting Cynthia’s recovery to obtain her full statement.
