Vice President Kashim Shettima has sparked a heated online debate after video emerged showing him opening the door of a car for his visiting Brazilian counterpart, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, following their recent meeting in Abuja.
In the viral video, Shettima can be seen escorting Alckmin to his vehicle and personally opening the door, a gesture that has drawn mixed reactions across social media.
Supporters view the gesture as a show of respect and humility, praising it as exemplary diplomacy. One comment on Nairaland read, “That’s humbleness. Nothing wrong with that. He is a good man.”

Another person on Facebook supported the act, saying, “A host can also open the door of his house the same way to let a guest inside. Una too dey look for gist in this country, to distract you from more important issues.”
On the other hand, critics argue that the act breaches protocol. Some contend that it’s unusual — perhaps even inappropriate — for a vice president to physically open a car door for a foreign counterpart. One user asked, “For goodness sake, this is bad diplomatic relations for Nigeria… The Brazilian VP has his own protocol…Imagine something or security breach occurs?”
Reacting to the video on Facebook, Chukwuebuka Nwafor wrote, “Aboki. What does he know? Is he not the one that once donned three-piece suits over a pair of canvass wears?”
