Coming right off the back of an exciting and action-packed Premier League Gameweek 9, the Carabao Cup (as is alternatively often referred to) will be back in live action this week with some exciting and tricky fixtures to look forward to. These next round of fixtures is scheduled for October 29th and 30th.
With teams facing packed schedules, we can expect heavy squad rotations to manage fatigue, injuries, and other challenges, especially in the Premier League. But regardless, these fixtures are still crucial; since the Carabao Cup follows a single-leg knockout format, there will be no second leg, which means every team will have to put up a top shift to stand a chance at securing a spot in the quarterfinals, making each game a high-stakes affair.

Tuesday, October 29:
Southampton vs. Stoke City:
This is a clash between two mid-table teams in their respective divisions, both looking to cause an upset and progress to the next round. Southampton seems to have a slight edge, thanks to the home advantage and more experience against Premier League-level opponents in recent years. The visitors, however, have shown they can be a tricky side on their day.
Brentford vs. Sheffield Wednesday:
Given their solid standing in the Premier League, Brentford will come into this one as clear favourites, and are likely to rotate some key players. Sheffield Wednesday, from the Championship, however, will see this as a chance to upset the odds and make a statement; the Premier League side is still poised to get the job done though.
Wednesday, October 30:
Brighton & Hove Albion vs. Liverpool:
This is a quite tasty clash between two attacking Premier League sides that love playing attacking football. Liverpool will be looking to bounce back from their recent draw against Arsenal on Sunday at the Emirates, while Brighton will be fired up and aiming to cause an upset.
Preston North End vs. Arsenal:
This one feels like a classic David vs. Goliath encounter with Premier League giants and clear favourites, Arsenal looking to face a Championship side. Preston will however, see this as their chance to pull off something special and perhaps, historic. Which ever the case is, it’s definitely one to look out for.

This game revives an old rivalry, with both teams gunning for a spot in the quarterfinals. United haven’t exactly been in top form lately, but playing at Old Trafford might just give them a definite edge. Leicester will look to test their mettle, but it could be a tough ask against a United side eager to get back on track.\
Newcastle United vs. Chelsea:
A clash of two Premier League heavyweights, both with aspirations of both domestic and European success this season. Chelsea are currently on a decent run of form, which might tilt the odds slightly in their favour, but Newcastle would indeed be a tough test, especially in front of their home crowd at St. James’ Park, one of the toughest grounds in the league.
Tottenham Hotspur vs. Manchester City:
This is a classic everyone is most likely looking forward to as it’s a potential blockbuster match between two top-four contenders in the league. Manchester City, as expected, will come in as favourites, but Tottenham have shown they can spring a surprise and will be definitely looking to upset the odds, especially at the White Hart Lane.
Aston Villa vs. Crystal Palace:
Another all-Premier League affair, and it’s shaping up to be a close one as both Villa and Palace have been playing some impressive football lately. The hosts strong form at the Villa Park might however, give them the upper hand, but Palace are no pushover and most definitely not to be written off. This could easily go down to the wire.
It’s worth noting that the Carabao Cup is more than just another shot at silverware as it significantly offers a potential route into European football, with a place in the UEFA Conference League up for grabs, for teams outside the traditional top four. Beyond that, the competition provides clubs a chance to experiment with new tactics and give younger or fringe players valuable minutes, especially as it’s involving several other teams for different divisions in the country.
