The funeral service was held at the Igreja Matriz church, where the two brothers were honored in an emotional ceremony attended by Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, local dignitaries, Liverpool teammates, and Portugal national team players. Among those present were Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk, Bruno Fernandes, Rúben Dias, and Bernardo Silva—all emotional as they paid their final respects.

The crash, which occurred on Thursday, was caused by a tyre blowout while their vehicle attempted to overtake another car near Salamanca, Spain. The brothers were returning from a private trip.

Diogo Jota, aged 28, had just married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, 11 days earlier. The couple shared three children.

Liverpool FC has pledged to pay the remaining two years of Diogo Jota’s contract to his devastated family following the 28-year-old forward’s tragic death in a car crash in Spain on July 3 alongside his brother, André Silva. The family is also expected to receive the club’s financial support during this difficult period.

In addition, Liverpool has decided to retire Jota’s number 20 shirt as a lasting tribute.
