2027: "I will End Corruption in One Month if I'm Elected President" — Amaechi Vows

Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has vowed to serve only one term if elected president in the 2027 general elections. He made the declaration during an appearance on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, on Thursday.

Amaechi said his commitment is driven by national interest and the need to uphold Nigeria’s long-standing power rotation agreement between the North and South.

“If I won’t do more than four years, I would say that,” he stated, adding, “For now, the way Nigeria is, you must keep to that unwritten agreement—South eight years, North eight years.”

He referenced his past efforts to maintain that balance in 2015, when he opposed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after it allegedly reneged on its promise to allow power shift to the North.

“That would have created instability. So I supported a northern candidate for balance,” he said, affirming he would also insist the South be allowed to complete its turn.

Amaechi is currently aligned with the emerging opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which is yet to finalize its zoning formula.

Meanwhile, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has similarly pledged to serve only one term if elected in 2027. In a recent X Space session with his supporters, Obi said he would step down in 2031 if that’s the agreement needed to build a broad-based coalition.

“If there is any form of agreement that will restrict me to four years in office, I will comply,” Obi affirmed, also promising to restore national stability within two years if elected.

Both leaders are positioning themselves as consensus candidates willing to make personal sacrifices for national unity.
