Tensions have escalated within the Labour Party as two rival factions—led by Julius Abure and Lamidi Apapa—have given former presidential candidate Peter Obi 48 hours to resign from the party following his endorsement of a new opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), reports SaharaReporters.
The ultimatum was issued in separate statements on Thursday by the factions’ spokespersons, Obiora Ifoh and Dr. Abayomi Arabambi, who accused Obi of betraying the party’s ideology by aligning with what they described as a coalition of “recycled, desperate, and frustrated politicians.”
Obi, in a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), acknowledged the coalition, noting that it aims to “sacrifice and work together towards the 2027 General Elections” and deliver “a competent, capable, and compassionate leadership.” He defended the move as a necessary step to dismantle structures that perpetuate poverty and insecurity in Nigeria.

However, Arabambi criticized the coalition as a “convergence of political hawks,” saying, “Desperate politicians can’t birth a new Nigeria. The people in that gathering are power mongers seeking only to relaunch themselves, not serve the people.”
He further accused Obi of holding “dual allegiance,” warning that the Labour Party “is not available for individuals with one leg in the party and another leg elsewhere.”
Ifoh echoed this, stating, “We know of several nocturnal meetings Peter Obi has held, lobbying members to join his new platform. The Labour Party has disassociated from the coalition, and anyone involved must resign within 48 hours.”
Both factions insist Obi’s move undermines the party’s integrity, warning that the coalition does not reflect the aspirations of Nigeria’s youth or promise a truly new Nigeria.
