Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari is currently undergoing medical treatment in London, following a sudden deterioration in health after what was initially described as a routine check-up.
According to multiple sources close to his family, Buhari, 82, traveled to the United Kingdom in April for his annual medical examination. However, soon after his arrival, he reportedly fell ill and was admitted to an undisclosed hospital.
There are conflicting reports about when exactly he took ill—with some sources claiming he became sick while still in Nigeria and was flown out, while others say the illness developed after he arrived in the UK.

Buhari’s long-time spokesperson, Garba Shehu, confirmed the news, saying:
“It is true that the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, is unwell. He has been receiving treatment in the UK. You would recall he made it known that he was going for his annual medical check-up. He became ill there, but I am happy to announce to you that he is doing well in his recovery… We pray for his healthy recovery.”
While the exact nature of his illness and the name of the hospital remain undisclosed, the situation has renewed public scrutiny over Buhari’s history of lengthy medical trips abroad, a pattern that was common throughout his presidency between 2015 and 2023.
Some of his notable medical absences include a 50-day trip in January 2017 and a 104-day stay in May 2017, both in London. At one point, an apartment was secured for him near a London hospital to facilitate discreet access.
Since he stepped down in May 2023, Buhari retired to his hometown, Daura, in Katsina State. His prolonged absence now raises concerns about his recovery and potential return to Nigeria. As of press time, no official statement has been issued.
