Liverpool and Portugal star Diogo Jota, 28, tragically died in a car crash in Spain’s Zamora province early Thursday, alongside his brother, André Silva, 26, also a professional footballer, playing for Portuguese second division side Penafiel.
The brothers were driving a Lamborghini on the A-52 motorway near Cernadilla when a tyre burst during an overtaking maneuver, causing the vehicle to veer off-road and ignite.
Emergency crews from the Castilla y León region confirmed that both occupants died instantly at the scene when the car burst into flames.
Jota had recently tied the knot on June 22 with longtime partner Rute Cardoso. The couple, together since 2012, shared three young children.

Born on December 4, 1996, in Porto, Portugal, Jota rose through the football ranks with determination and flair, earning respect across Europe for his explosive performances and versatility in attack. A beloved figure at Liverpool, Jota made 182 appearances and scored 65 goals after joining the club from Wolves in 2020. His contributions helped the Reds win the Premier League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup.
Internationally, he earned 49 caps for Portugal and was part of their Nations League-winning squad.
Tributes poured in after the news. The Portuguese Football Federation said they were “utterly devastated” and requested a minute’s silence before their next match.
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville and Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher led heartfelt condolences.
