The feud has erupted again between U.S. President Donald Trump and his best friend, Tesla boss Elon Musk, with Trump hinting that Musk might need to close up his shop and head back home to South Africa.
Trump took to Truth Social to remind Musk that he was always against the EV mandate and that Musk knew very well about it before supporting him. He accused Musk of continuously vouching for the implementation of the EV mandate when he knows he is against it.
Trump admits electric cars are cool; however, everyone should not be forced to own one. He accused Musk of leaning heavily on U.S. subsidies and threatening to strip them away.
He also threatened to put an end to rocket launches, satellites, or electric car production, saying that doing so would help America save a lot of money while Musk goes back to his home country, South Africa—which has been a thing people talked about in secret.

Trump wrote on Truth Social:
“Elon Musk knew, long before he so strongly Endorsed me for President, that I was strongly against the EV Mandate. It is ridiculous, and was always a major part of my campaign. Electric cars are fine, but not everyone should be forced to own one. Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far, and without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa. No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production, and our Country would save a FORTUNE. Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard look at this?
BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!!!”
This comes after Musk slammed Trump’s proposed “$3.3 trillion Big Beautiful Bill,” particularly because it rescinded electric vehicle tax credits—something Musk strongly opposes. He countered on X, calling the bill “utterly insane,” and floated forming a new “America Party” if it passes.
Tesla shares took a hit, dropping over 5% in pre-market trading amid concerns the feud threatens funding to Musk’s companies.
The tension marks a sharp shift in the relationship. Just a month ago, Musk was working alongside Trump, chairing the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—a role many believed signaled a strong alliance. That alliance unraveled quickly over the EV credits dispute.
Trump doubled down, threatening to cancel federal contracts worth billions, while Musk insisted tax breaks—both for clean energy and fossil fuels—should go.
Interestingly, despite the anger, Trump later softened his tone, calling Musk a “wonderful guy” in an interview. Musk himself admitted some of his posts “went too far,” deleting them and offering a partial apology.
Still, the chill remains. Trump recently cautioned Musk against backing Democrats, warning of “very serious consequences” if he does.
This public showdown shows a friendship turned rivalry—tech vs. politics, with billions and future policy hanging in the balance. For now, the clash continues to ripple through markets, government, and the tech world.
