There was an outpouring of grief and heartbreak on Friday, June 27, as family, friends, and sympathizers gathered in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, to bid a painful farewell to 37-year-old Chioma Blessing Nwaka—the mother of five who was gruesomely killed by her husband.

Chioma’s life was cut short in the most horrifying way. On January 21, 2025, her husband, Obiozor Nwaka, allegedly set her ablaze at their home in Eziezekwe village after accusing her of infidelity. She died the following day in the hospital from the severe burns she suffered.

Her death sparked widespread outrage across the country, including civil society groups, women’s rights advocates, and the general public. Many have since called for justice to be served and for stronger actions against domestic violence.

Before her final burial in Abagana, Chioma’s body was taken to her family home in Irefi, Oraifite, in Ekwusigo Local Government Area, where relatives and well-wishers gathered for a short stopover. The atmosphere was filled with sorrow.

Described by those who knew her as a kind-hearted, hardworking, and devoted mother, Chioma’s burial was a painful reminder of the growing danger of unchecked domestic abuse. Many wept openly at the funeral, not just for her loss, but for the five children she left behind.

“She didn’t deserve this,” one mourner told Igbo TV. “She was full of life. Always smiling. Always putting her children first.”
