Israeli Military Kills Top Hamas Commander Hakham Al-Issa, who Was Behind the October 7 Attack on Israel

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have confirmed the killing of senior Hamas commander Hakham Muhammad Issa Al-Issa in a targeted airstrike on Gaza City, marking a major development in Israel’s ongoing offensive in the region.

According to IDF statements released Saturday evening, Al-Issa was eliminated in an operation in the Sabra neighborhood. He was described as one of the founding members of Hamas’ military wing and a top strategist behind the deadly October 7, 2023, assault on Israel, which claimed the lives of over 1,160 Israelis and foreign nationals.

Al-Issa, who reportedly led Hamas’ force build-up and training operations, served as the chief of staff for the group’s combat and administrative support division. His role included advancing Hamas’ aerial and naval capabilities and overseeing logistics for attacks against Israel.

“He was instrumental in planning and executing the October 7 massacre,” the IDF stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “The IDF and Israel Security Agency will continue to locate and eliminate all terrorists involved.”

Palestinian sources report that Al-Issa was killed alongside his wife and grandson, though this has not been independently verified.

His death is seen as a significant blow to Hamas, especially as he was considered one of the last remaining senior commanders still active in Gaza. The IDF says this targeted strike is part of its broader campaign to dismantle Hamas’ leadership and operational capabilities.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to deepen. The Hamas-run health ministry reports over 56,400 Palestinians have died since Israel’s retaliatory campaign began. Crowds of Palestinians were seen along the Coastal Road in Netzarim, south of Gaza City, awaiting aid through the Netzarim crossing amid the ongoing conflict.
