Iran held a massive state funeral on Saturday for about 60 people, including senior military commanders, nuclear scientists, women, and children killed in the recent 12-day war with Israel.

The ceremony in Tehran drew thousands of black-clad mourners chanting anti-U.S. and anti-Israel slogans like “Death to America” and “Death to Israel.”

Coffins draped in Iranian flags were paraded through the streets, flanked by mock missiles and portraits of the deceased. Among the prominent figures laid to rest were Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Iran’s Armed Forces Chief of Staff, his wife and daughter; Revolutionary Guards Commander Hossein Salami; and nuclear physicist Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi.

The war, which ended with a ceasefire earlier in the week, was marked by heavy casualties. Iran’s Health Ministry reported 627 deaths from Israeli airstrikes. In retaliation, Iran’s missile attacks on Israel reportedly killed 28 people.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani, an advisor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, attended the funeral. Shamkhani was injured in a recent Israeli strike. Khamenei, although absent, had earlier hailed the ceasefire as a “strategic victory,” a claim dismissed by both Israel and former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Trump, speaking on his Truth Social platform, accused Khamenei of lying and claimed he had prevented his assassination during the conflict. “I saved him from a very ugly and ignominious death,” Trump wrote, adding that recent talks on sanctions relief had been abandoned due to Khamenei’s rhetoric.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi fired back, warning Trump against disrespecting Khamenei and emphasizing that Iran’s people “do not take kindly to threats.”

Amid growing uncertainty, Iran’s parliament has suspended cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, which said it was still assessing damage to Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi cautioned that military action alone cannot stop nuclear proliferation, urging diplomatic resolution instead.
