Renowned Nigerian businessman and philanthropist Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata has passed away at the age of 94.

His death was confirmed on Saturday by his Principal Private Secretary, Mustapha Abdullahi Junaid, who announced the news in a heartfelt Facebook post. “It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of our beloved father, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata. May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Jannatul Firdaus,” Junaid wrote, noting that funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.

Dantata reportedly died in the early hours of Saturday, June 28, 2025. While some sources say he passed in Abuja, others claim he died at a hospital in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, after a brief illness.

Born on May 19, 1931, in Kano, Dantata was a towering figure in Nigeria’s business landscape for several decades. He was the founder of Express Petroleum & Gas Company Ltd. and played a vital role in the country’s private sector development. His impact stretched beyond commerce, as he was also known for his philanthropic efforts across Northern Nigeria.

Alhaji Aminu Dantata was also a close relative of Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, being a brother to Dangote’s grandfather.

He is survived by seven children, including prominent businessman Alhaji Tajuddeen Aminu Dantata, and several grandchildren.
