In a deadly escalation of violence, armed bandits launched a surprise attack on a military camp near Bangi in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State, killing about 20 Nigerian soldiers in the early hours of Tuesday, June 24, 2025.
According to sources within the security forces, the assailants, heavily armed, overran the camp after a fierce gun battle at dawn.
“Today, about 20 soldiers were killed by armed bandits near Bangi, Mariga LGA of Niger State, in an early morning attack on their camp,” a military source confirmed.

While the Nigerian Army has yet to release an official statement, photographs of the slain soldiers have been obtained, and several others were reported injured in the attack. The number of casualties may rise as more details emerge.

The attack has triggered fear among residents, many of whom are fleeing their homes in anticipation of further violence. Banditry in Niger and neighboring states has intensified in recent months, with rural communities frequently targeted.

Also in Zamfara, terrorists stormed Tofa village in Magami District, Gusau LGA, killing more than 15 residents. The village, located near the state capital, has suffered repeated attacks and extortion by bandit groups.

“The bandits on Sunday attacked the community; they ambushed the troops and killed many of them… In Tofa, over 15 people were massacred, many others were injured, and some were nowhere to be found,” a local source said.
The situation remains tense across affected areas.
