BREAKING: Adamawa Govt Strips Atiku Abubakar of Waziri Adamawa Title

The Adamawa State Government has stripped former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of his traditional title, Waziri Adamawa, citing non-indigeneship. The move, announced in a circular dated June 20, 2025, affects other key titleholders and has sparked political uproar across the state.

The circular, signed by Mrs. Adama Felicity Mamman, Permanent Secretary of the Department of Chieftaincy Affairs, stated that all Kingmakers and Council members must now be indigenes of their respective chiefdoms. By this directive, Atiku, who hails from Jada in the Ganye Chiefdom, is disqualified from holding a title under the Adamawa Emirate Council.

“The new policy affects all Emirates/Traditional Councils,” the letter stated, listing local government areas considered valid for each emirate.

The Waziri Adamawa is the second-highest traditional title in the state, making Atiku’s removal highly symbolic. Analysts believe the move is politically motivated and aimed at weakening Atiku’s influence amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.

The fallout between Atiku and Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri—once allies in the 2023 PDP campaign—has intensified, especially following reports of Atiku’s talks with opposition leaders like Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, and Aishatu Binani.

Meanwhile, a proposed bill seeking to empower the governor to remove any ailing emir and appoint successors is also causing concern. Critics fear it could give the governor excessive control over traditional institutions.
