There was chaos on Thursday evening, June 19, in Oko, Anambra State, after unknown gunmen stormed lodges near the Total filling station close to Federal Polytechnic Oko.

The attackers shot at residents and passersby, killing many and kidnapping an unknown number of people.

Eyewitnesses said the gunmen came in two vehicles and started shooting without warning. Students of the polytechnic who live nearby recorded videos from their hostels as the attack unfolded.

Multiple videos filmed by terrified students from nearby hostels and residents of the area captured the sound of continuous gunfire and scenes of chaos.

Some of the victims were seen lying in blood outside the lodges—some already dead, others struggling for help. But with the shooting going on, no one could risk coming out to assist them.

One of those killed was a well-known man who sold barbecue in the area. His body was seen lying near the road. Unconfirmed reports say some lecturers may have also been taken by the attackers.

There are rumors that the attack may have been linked to the recent setting up of a security checkpoint by Operation Udo Ga Achi, close to the Total station. Some locals had earlier complained that the area already had too many checkpoints, and tension had been building.

Some people also believe the attackers are cultists, as indicated in one of the videos, where they were shouting “men dey, who say men no dey, wida.”

The incident has left residents and students in fear, as many now worry the attackers could return.
