The former Head of State of Nigeria and commander of the Nigerian forces during the Nigerian-Biafra civil war, Yakubu Gowon, has claimed that he was not fighting against Igbos as a tribe but against the breakup of Nigeria.
The 90-year-old military veteran, during an interview with Arise TV, explained that he had a responsibility to keep Nigeria together; hence, he had to choose between allowing secession or using whatever physical power he had to stop it.
He emphasized that the war was never against Igbos, but against Biafran secessionists.

The Nigerian Civil War, which lasted from 1967 to 1970, was a devastating conflict triggered by the secession of the Eastern Region under the name of the Republic of Biafra.
The war led to over a million deaths, mainly due to starvation. General Gowon consistently maintained that his actions were not against the Igbo people but a necessary response to preserve Nigeria’s unity.
The conflict ended in 1970 with Biafra’s surrender and Gowon’s introduction of a national healing policy tagged “No Victor, No Vanquished.”
