About 200 people, including internally displaced persons (IDPs), women, children, and five security operatives, were brutally killed in fresh attacks on Yelewata and Daudu communities in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State by suspected terrorist herdsmen.

According to residents, the attacks began late at night from two fronts, overwhelming security forces and local youth. Victims were shot, hacked, and burned alive—many in market stalls that had become temporary shelters for IDPs. Community leader Matthew Mnyan described the scene as horrific, recounting how entire families, including toddlers, were burned beyond recognition.

The attack on Daudu was repelled by security forces and local youths, though five operatives were killed, including one reportedly a military captain. Reports suggest over 300 armed assailants had camped near the area ahead of the assault, making the attack both planned and coordinated.

Mnyan noted that the community had received prior warnings of impending attacks, including threats to nearby towns. “It is a planned issue being executed. Fulanis have taken over the eastern side of Yelewata and are farming on it,” he said, warning of a broader agenda to seize land in Benue.

Chief Dennis Gbongbon, President of the Association of United Farmers Benue Valley, confirmed over 62 IDPs and farmers were slaughtered, with many more burned in stalls. “Eighty-five percent of the victims are displaced people,” he said.

Benue State officials and the police confirmed the attack but refrained from giving a specific casualty count. A military source confirmed the death of two soldiers.

The police say efforts are ongoing to track the attackers and restore calm in the region.
