A Zimbabwean student, identified as Bhoomi Chauhan, narrowly escaped a harrowing ordeal after missing Air India Flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London by just ten minutes. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner tragically crashed into a hostel at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, claiming the lives of 241 people on board and at least 28 on the ground.
Chauhan, a 28-year-old business administration student based in Bristol, said she was caught in heavy traffic and arrived at the airport around 12:20 pm—ten minutes after boarding had closed. Despite her pleas, airline staff denied her entry. Moments later, Flight AI171 took off at 1:38 pm and crashed shortly after in the Meghani Nagar area.

“I couldn’t believe it—my legs started trembling,” she told the BBC Gujarati service. “This is totally a miracle for me.” In shock, she paused to drink tea nearby, unaware of the disaster about to unfold. Moments later, she received news of the crash while arranging a refund with her travel agent.
The crash is the deadliest involving the Boeing 787 and is one of India’s worst aviation disasters in decades. Rescue operations are ongoing amid widespread devastation at the crash site. Investigators have recovered the flight’s black box and are examining all possibilities, including engine failure and mechanical malfunction.
Global leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have extended their condolences. Modi visited the site and hospitals to comfort victims. The UK Foreign Office has offered consular assistance to British nationals and their families.
