The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has called on Igbos across Nigeria and beyond to boycott all activities related to June 12, Nigeria’s Democracy Day, until the federal government begins to honour May 30 as Biafra Remembrance Day.
In a statement released by IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group insisted that the Igbo nation will not participate in what it described as a “selective national ritual” that disregards the pain and history of Biafrans.
Powerful also addressed claims of a faction within Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural group, dismissing them as false and politically motivated. He declared that Senator Emmanuel Mbatta remains the only recognized leader of Ohanaeze and condemned those claiming otherwise as political tools serving external interests.

“There is no such thing as a factional Ohanaeze Ndigbo,” Powerful said. “Those pushing that narrative are political errand boys with no mandate from the Igbo people. They do not represent Ndigbo and certainly not Biafra.”
He distanced the Igbo nation and IPOB from comments made by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, saying the latter does not speak for Ohanaeze or for Igbos generally.
Powerful further criticized attempts to limit the geographical reach of Igbo heritage, stating that Igbo-speaking communities exist in at least 13 Nigerian states, not just seven as claimed by some individuals.
Reiterating IPOB’s position, he said, “Until Nigeria honours May 30, we will not be part of any Democracy Day celebrations. This is not just IPOB’s stand—it is a matter of identity, truth, and dignity.”
He urged all Biafrans to reject June 12 celebrations and remain united in preserving the memory and sacrifices of their ancestors.
