Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has defended his administration’s investment in a brewery during his tenure, noting its lasting economic impact on the state.
Speaking in a recent interview with Arise TV, Obi explained that attracting investors to Anambra was a major challenge during his time in office, especially for industrial projects like the brewery. However, he said the venture has since become a key revenue generator for the state.
According to him, the brewery directly employs around 500 workers, while more than 5,000 others are engaged in related services such as distribution and delivery. He emphasized that it remains one of the most profitable investments made by the state.

Responding to critics who claim that the government’s shares in the brewery have lost value, Obi dismissed the assertion, arguing that similar breweries in other Nigerian states do not face such public scrutiny. He insisted that the project was sound and has continued to yield benefits.
Obi also tackled allegations that his administration worsened poverty in Anambra. He pointed to official records and international assessments from his tenure between 2006 and 2014, which, he said, showed significant improvements in education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
He stressed that under his leadership, Anambra received recognition as one of Nigeria’s most development-focused states. He encouraged critics to speak with experts and organizations involved in monitoring poverty and development at the time.
Concluding, Obi noted that he still lives in Anambra and is familiar to the people. “I didn’t govern for praise,” he said. “I governed to serve. Anyone is welcome to visit and see what the people think of me today.”
