Kidnappers Release Dead Body of Retired Army Major After Collecting ₦10 Million Ransom in Kogi

According to a report by SaharaReporters, kidnappers killed a retired Nigerian Army Major, Pastor Joe Ajayi, despite collecting a ₦10 million ransom from his family.

Ajayi, 76, a respected cleric and former Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kabba-Bunu, was abducted from his residence in Odo-Ape, Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area, Kogi State, by unidentified gunmen who invaded the community while firing sporadically for over an hour.

Sources said the abductors initially demanded a ₦50 million ransom but later reduced it to ₦10 million after Ajayi’s health reportedly deteriorated in captivity due to a lack of access to his medication.

Believing he was still alive, the family paid the reduced ransom. However, the kidnappers directed them to a location where they found his lifeless body. His remains have since been deposited at the Kabba Specialist Hospital mortuary.

The incident has sparked renewed concerns about rising insecurity in Okunland, with the Okun Development Association expressing deep concern over the growing threat of violence and abductions in the region.

When contacted by SaharaReporters, Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer William Aya said he was not yet aware of the development but promised to investigate the matter.

The murder of the retired Major and community leader adds to the list of high-profile killings in Nigeria’s north-central region, where kidnapping for ransom has continued and grown unperturbed.
