Labour Party 2023 presidential candidate and former Anambra State governor, Mr. Peter Obi, has cleared the air that the removal of subsidy by the Tinubu-led administration is not wrong.
Speaking at the Arise TV State of the Nation program, Peter Obi said he was never opposed to the idea of subsidy removal; in fact, he included it in his manifesto, where he mentioned organized steps to do it.
However, the manner in which the government of President Bola Tinubu did it is what was wrong.
“I’ve consistently maintained that I would have removed the fuel subsidy,” he said. “If you go to my manifesto, it’s there. steps I would have taken to do it in an organized manner.

“There is nothing wrong in removing of subsidy. What is wrong is the haphazard way in which it was announced and implemented,” Peter Obi said.
He went ahead to explain that the period of subsidy was a regime of criminality, where some persons took advantage of it to milk the country.
He pointed out the reasons why the subsidy was said to be removed, which include an end to borrowing to make available funds to be invested in critical areas of development, but where are the funds and the investments, and why are we still borrowing? Peter Obi asked.
According to Peter Obi, the critical areas of development are health, education, and pulling people out of poverty. But if any of these three have not improved, then the government has not achieved its objective.
Peter Obi also said there is nothing wrong with floating the currency, but things of such should be done when there is productivity.
That he would have done all these in an organized manner.
