The remains of Nigerian boxer Segun Olanrewaju, known as “Success,” are expected to be repatriated from Ghana to Nigeria next week, following over two months of legal and diplomatic efforts.

Recall that Igbo Tv had reported that Olanrewaju, 40, collapsed during a bout against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu on March 29 at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra. He was pronounced dead at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital shortly after.

The repatriation was delayed due to legal requirements, including the need for a coroner’s report under Ghana’s Coroner Act. Ghana’s Minister for Youth and Sports, Kofi Adams, stated that the report was necessary before proceeding with the evacuation process.

An investigative committee, chaired by Ambassador Amarkai Amarteifio, found that Olanrewaju had pre-existing heart conditions, including an enlarged heart, which may have contributed to his death. The committee also identified lapses in safety protocols by the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), noting the absence of a qualified ringside doctor during the match.

President of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC), Rafiu Ladipo, confirmed the imminent return of Olanrewaju’s body, stating, “I can assure you, latest by next week, the body will be brought back. I don’t know what particular day.”

The committee recommended that the Ghanaian government cover all repatriation and burial expenses, emphasizing the importance of solidarity and respect for African unity.
