In a swift response to the devastating flood in Mokwa, Niger State, President Bola Tinubu has approved a N2 billion relief package to rebuild homes and support flood-affected residents.
The move comes after Vice President Kashim Shettima visited Niger State on Wednesday to sympathize with the state government and the victims of the flood. He noted that his visit was President Tinubu’s directive and assured the community of the federal government’s commitment to addressing the crisis after listening to their complaints.
“The President is heartbroken by the tragedy that befell Mokwa. He has directed swift action to ease the suffering of the people and to help rebuild what has been lost,” Shettima said.

The disaster has left over 160 dead, 2,000 homes damaged, four bridges collapsed, and many residents displaced. Tinubu’s relief package includes 20 trucks of food aid to be distributed with the help of local leaders. The President has also tasked the ministers of environment and agriculture to find urgent solutions to drainage problems in the town.
“The President has approved the immediate release of N2 billion for the rebuilding of houses destroyed by the flood. The minister for agriculture, Senator Abdullahi Sabi, who is an indigene of Niger State, is to relocate to the state. The Minister is tasked with ensuring that food items and relief materials provided by the Federal Government are properly distributed to those affected,” Shettima said.
The Niger State Deputy Governor, Yakubu Garba, expressed gratitude to the Federal government, describing the incident as a national catastrophe.
The traditional ruler of Nupe land, Yahaya Abubakar, also thanked the federal government for its support and urged the urgent completion of abandoned road projects in the area. The village head of Mokwa, Mohammed Aliyu, expressed gratitude for the relief package and hoped for continued assistance.
