More than 450,000 Nigerians have applied for fewer than 10,000 available positions in the Federal Civil Service, following a nationwide recruitment drive by the Federal Government.

The recruitment, announced in January 2025 by the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC), invited applications for over 70 positions across ministries and departments. Roles advertised included Administrative Officer, Education Officer, Programme Analyst, Foreign Affairs Officer, Medical Laboratory Scientist, Procurement Officer, and Senior Computer Engineer.

The FCSC’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Taiwo Hassan, confirmed that only qualified Nigerians were allowed to apply via the commission’s online portal. Although the deadline was initially March 10, it was extended to March 17 due to technical issues faced by applicants during registration.

Despite the extension, the application portal reportedly experienced high traffic, leading to frustrations among thousands of applicants.

A senior official at the FCSC, who asked not to be named, confirmed that the number of applicants exceeded 450,000, competing for fewer than 10,000 available slots.

“Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. If you don’t receive a notification, it means you were not shortlisted,” the official said. “The shortlisted applicants will take a Computer-Based Test in their respective states. There will be no rescheduling, and results will be released immediately after the test.”

The spokesperson for the commission added that further details regarding the next phase of the recruitment would be announced in due time.

This massive response reflects the country’s high unemployment rate and the increasing demand for stable government jobs.
