Activist and Socialite Vincent Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), visited the Onitsha drugs market in Anambra State on Friday, May 23, 2025, and accused the National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) of theft and extortion.
Speaking at the market amid cheering crowds and supporters, VDM said he decided to suspend his schedule and take action after hearing about the issue between NAFDAC and drug marketers in the biggest drug market in West Africa.
According to the report, NAFDAC on February 8, 2025, had stormed the market and shut down all 5000 available shops because they found some of the marketers peddling fake drugs.
After keeping the market locked for three months, leaving the marketers with nothing to survive on, NAFDAC came back asking the marketers to pay the sum of N500,000 for their shops to be unlocked. 1000 marketers have already paid. Soon the penalty was raised to N700,000.

VDM has accused NAFDAC of theft and extortion, stealing such an amount of money from the marketers, many of whom have been complaining they do not have such money to pay for their stores to be unlocked.
“NAFDAC shut the market down with the reason that some shops were selling fake drugs, instead of NAFDAC to arrest the people selling these fakes drugs they decided to shut down the whole market with over 5000 shops after three months they came back to say each shop will pay N500,000 to get their shops opened back and then they later went on to increase it to N700,000,” VDM said.
“This is injustice and total extortion and abuse of power and office, if NAFDAC say they found fake drugs they should go on to prosecute those found wanting why are they forcing everyone to pay N700,000 for a crime committed by some
persons?”
VDM called on President Tinubu to do something, saying all herdsmen have been killing innocent people in the North, yet the government has never stopped them from their cow business, but they like flexing their muscles in the Southeast.
VDM threatened to lead a protest if NAFDAC did not open the market in two days. He also promised to help the marketers sue NAFDAC for extortion and abuse of power.
