The Lagos State Police Command has arrested Inspector Obic Modestus, the officer seen in a viral video assaulting an Uber driver.
The disturbing video was shared online by an X (Twitter) user identified as Oyindamola, also known as #dammiedammie35, who expressed anger over the way the driver was treated.
He wrote:
“A new video of Nigerian police men violently assault!ng an Uber driver. Please spread this video cos this is someone’s father they’re beat!ng like an animal like this.”
The video quickly spread across social media, sparking outrage from Nigerians who called for the officer to be identified and punished.
Reacting to the incident on Monday, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the officer has been summoned and would face disciplinary action.
His statement read:
“The Police Officer, Inspector Obic Modestus, has been summoned by the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) #LagosPoliceNG. He will be handed over to the Provost Department for appropriate disciplinary measures.”
Hundeyin added that the Commissioner of Police in Lagos, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has made it clear that the command will not tolerate any form of misconduct by its officers.
“The Lagos State Police Command, under CP Olohundare Jimoh, will not condone any form of incivility to members of the public,” he stated.
The arrest has been welcomed by many Nigerians online, who are calling for swift justice and a public update on the outcome of the case. The video has once again brought to light concerns over police brutality and the need for reforms within the police force.
