The Nigerian Police have firmly rejected a sit-at-home directive issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), urging residents of Anambra and other South-East states to disregard the order and carry on with their normal activities on May 30, 2025.
IPOB had declared the date a public holiday in remembrance of those who died during the Biafran War (1967–1970), announcing a total shutdown of movement—by land, air, and sea—across the region from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The group warned that all forms of human activity would be suspended, including school, business, and religious services.
In response, the Anambra State Police Command assured the public of safety. Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga stated that there was no official recognition of any lockdown and encouraged residents to go about their lawful activities without fear.

“We are not aware of any sit-at-home order. Residents are encouraged to go out freely. Adequate security will be provided,” Ikenga said, adding that the police would protect everyone engaged in legitimate business.
IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful reaffirmed the group’s commitment to commemorating fallen Biafran heroes through memorial events at home and abroad. He called on citizens to remain indoors as a sign of respect and warned against public movement, noting that only essential workers such as medical personnel, journalists, and emergency service providers would be exempt.
The police have promised to maintain law and order throughout the day and have cautioned against any act that could lead to violence. Authorities say they will ensure that no citizen is harassed for stepping out.
Past observances have been marred by clashes, prompting heightened security awareness this year.
