The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the arrest and detention of socialite and activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, following multiple petitions alleging his involvement in a series of financial crimes.

In a statement released by the Commission, VDM was reportedly invited several times to respond to allegations, but he failed to honour the invitations despite being contacted through his known addresses and communication channels. According to the EFCC, the petitions against Otse contain “grave allegations of financial malfeasance,” which the Commission said it could not ignore.

“The EFCC, in the exercise of its mandate, invited Martins Vincent Otse owing to a series of petitions bordering on sundry issues of alleged financial crimes. He refused to show up despite several invitations,” the statement read.

The Commission acknowledged VDM’s recent public criticisms of its operations, describing them as “unguarded attacks,” but clarified that his arrest was not motivated by those statements. “While such conduct is condemnable, his arrest was not informed by such attacks,” the EFCC said, adding that any issues related to his statements will be addressed by the appropriate law enforcement bodies.

The EFCC also confirmed that it had secured a valid remand order and that VDM has been granted administrative bail, pending the fulfillment of all conditions for his release.

While thanking the public for its keen interest, the agency urged Nigerians to refrain from making unfounded insinuations and allow the EFCC to carry out its duties without interference. Charges will be filed once investigations are completed.
