Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru declared the celebration of May Day as a gift to workers in the state. This announcement was made on Thursday, May 1st, 2025, at the celebration of Workers’ Day in Abakaliki.

The celebration of this year’s “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship” focused mainly on highlighting the central place employees have in the government and the development.

Referring to the workforce as the “engine room” of government, Nwifuru reaffirmed his commitment to improving their welfare, saying, “Throughout my time in office, workers will remain a shining example of excellence.”

He acknowledged the daily hardships they face and promised to give them a better civic environment for their development and productivity.

The occasion also featured a communiqué by Prof. Ogugua Egwu (Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress) and Mr. Chidi Igboji (Trade Union Congress), both of whom commended the governor for the passage of the N75,000 minimum wage.

They also added, however, that they deplored the delay in introducing shuttle buses to the state secretariat and made calls for better housing, increases in pensions, and better office infrastructure.

The event was wrapped up by a call for long-term cooperation between the workers and government in order to create a brighter future for Ebonyi State.
